A two-course, 27 hole club, the Makai Golf Club at Princeville
blends features of a premier golfing experience with the unique and
natural outdoor beauty Kauai offers to guests and residents on a daily
basis. Accentuating the property’s placement, the title Makai Golf
Club harnesses the literal translation of makai or “towards the sea,”
in Hawaiian language, with the supernal atmosphere of golfing in
and around serene lakes, native woodland, and spectacular coastline
Renovated and redesigned in 2009, the 18-hole Makai Course has
been rated the 65th best public golf courses in America by Golf Digest.
The course has also been ranked in the top 50 resort courses by Golf
Week magazine. The play of the course obviously has a large part to
do with those rankings, but the stunning oceanfront views certainly
help to elevate its status.
“We have five ocean front holes. If you combined all the ocean
front holes of other courses on the island we have more. Very rarely on
both the front and back nine do you get the ocean front opportunities
like you do on the Makai Course,” says golf professional and Makai
Golf Club at Princeville sales manager Doug Sutter.
Developing innovative ways to incorporate a broader scope of
guest, Makai Golf Club at Princeville has recently instituted two very
unique and exciting features for both golfers and non-golfers.
As one of only 50 courses worldwide to feature this new, and
dynamic golf course transportation device, Makai Golf Club at
Princeville launched their Golf Board experience in March. So what
is a Golf Board?
In essence a Golf Board is a four-wheeled motorized board
designed similarly to a wide-based skateboard. Equipped with a
steering bar, making stabilization and maneuverability quite simple,
the bar also acts as a golf bag holder, allowing for quick and exciting
transportation between holes.
“You have such a wide base on the Golf Board that you feel
comfortable. You hit your ball, jump on the Golf Board and then
you’re literally surfing the Earth down the fairway,” says Sutter —
who adds Golf Boards have been noted to speed up the rate of play
by over 20 percent because their effective mobility.
“Battery operated, Golf Boards top off at 10 miles per hour. It’s
a great workout, using your lower body, while your core is engaged.
It’s funny sometimes people are bummed they have to get off their
board to actually hit their ball. It’s great for junior golfers, because
now they’re the ones dragging Dad out to course.”
Typically golfers will switch over to a traditional golf cart after nine
holes on the Golf Board, but Makai Golf Club at Princeville does
offer complimentary back nine use of the boards.
Ranked by National Geographic magazine as one of the top five
scenic golf settings in the world, the directors of Makai Golf Club
at Princeville knew it was time to open up their stunning course to
everyone who would like to appreciate its surrounding and exotic
In an effort to be more inclusive Makai Golf Club at Princeville
is now offering Sunset Tours showcasing the outstretched viewpoints
of the oceanfront, Mount Makana, Queen’s Bath, the outline of Puff
the Magic Dragon, and Hä‘ena Beach, among many other wildlife
highlights such as common whale and albatross sightings that can be
viewed from the course.
“One of our major appeals is our beauty so we want to make sure
we are forward and accommodating for everybody. We know only 10
percent of visitors to Kauai are golfers, so it’s programs like this that
we can offer to the other 90 percent,” adds Sutter.
Convenient for groups, families or couples the Sunset Tours are
self-guided with the assistance of a detailed map that navigates parties
in and around holes 10 through 18.
A few other features offered at Makai Golf Club at Princeville is
their Monday and Wednesday sunrise yoga on the oceanfront seventh
green, as well as $10 adult clinics and complimentary junior clinics.
